God's Classrooms

by Jim Morris

Where do people go to learn about the Lord Jesus Christ? “At church,” we say. After all, Christians assemble regularly for prayer, study and worship. Unfortunately, many small churches only meet once a week for a couple of hours. Honestly, how much can we learn about the most important person in human history in only one or two hours a week?

The apostle Paul would have been shocked by the way we limit Christian education to one or two hours a week. His own zealous lifestyle shows that God's classrooms are to be found everywhere. Every Christian is a potential teacher for the Lord. Every human being is a potential student of Jesus. Yet, where are the classrooms? Chapter 18 of the book of Acts highlights three kinds of classrooms used in teaching the truth.

First, the WORKPLACE can be a classroom for God (Acts 18:1-3). The apostle Paul, as a tentmaker, often worked alongside others while sharing his faith. Aquila and Priscilla were two who benefited from their association with Paul. Imagine the encouragement, insights and challenges they must have received from him! Can we share our faith with our friends at work, too? Certainly! “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect...” (1 Peter 3:15).

Second, the CHURCH can be a classroom for God (Acts 18:4-6). The assembly provides a powerful setting for intensive study of the scriptures in community. Paul taught the whole counsel of God in public assemblies. In fact, the church assembly is perhaps the mightiest classroom that God has. Therefore, “let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another...” (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Finally, the HOME can be a classroom for God (18:7-11, 24-28). Teaching at home is perhaps the least formal, most personal and really enjoyable. Hopes and fears can be shared freely. Anything can be discussed. However, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29).

As a result, the good news about Jesus is taught to many people in various settings. Some oppose the teaching of Jesus (Acts 18:6, 12-17). Others believe and obey (18:7-8, 27-28). In all cases, the Lord is always with His disciples. Jesus comforted Paul, saying: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city” (18:9-10).
