The doorbell rang repeatedly early Monday morning. As I made my way to the front door I could not imagine who it could be. Then the person switched to knocking. “Oh boy, someone is impatient,” I thought.
As I approached the front door I could see a rather large fellow through the window in the door. I quickly opened it and froze. Standing in front of me for the first time in over 23 years was my old Army sergeant with whom I had worked while stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as an MP!
“Elmer?” I asked. “Is that really you?” The stunned look on his face told me that he felt the same doubt and hope. He paused and said, “Jim?” We stood in the doorway speechless like a couple of idiots. Finally, common courtesy prompted me to invite Elmer and his wife, Kay, inside for a visit.
We talked of old times that we had together in the service--our hopes, our dreams, our big plans. Yet life did not turn out exactly as we had expected it. Of course, we reminded each other how much we had changed. Kay, looked at me and squinted. Then she smiled, and patted her face as she said, “I almost didn't recognize you because now your face is so 'chunky.'” Chunky, eh? Well, I guess I have put on a little more weight since then -- but “chunky?” We laughed and joked together. It was great.
We also mourned for C. J., a fellow soldier and friend who was no longer with us. We found out via an Internet search that he had passed away in 1993. He is deeply missed. The three of us had worked together as a team held together with a common purpose and now our lives have taken separate paths. We wondered if we will ever get the chance to see any of our other old Army buddies again.
If we are in the Lord's Army, then the answer is a definite, “YES!” We will meet again! The grandest of all reunions is yet to come. Our Captain (Revelation 19:11-16) will never abandon us. Our fellow soldiers and friends will never suffer again. All things will be made new and wonderful.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:1-4).
