Back to School

by Jim Morris

Solomon gave us sage advice in Proverbs 22:16 when he said, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” The apostle Paul added, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:1-4).

It is time for our children to go “back to school” for the Fall semester. However, the children of the Lord should be in His school every day! God impressed that point to the children of Israel when Moses said:

“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).

Who else will teach the wisdom of the Lord, if not those who love the word of God and love His children? For example, King David taught his son Solomon the word of God. In fact, David went through great pains for his son to embrace God’s wisdom. David took Moses’ command in Deuteronomy chapter six very seriously. In Proverbs 4, Solomon gives his father, David, the credit for teaching him God’s ways (Proverbs 4:3-4). Later, Solomon was given the chance to ask for anything he wanted and he chose wisdom (1 Kings 3:5-15).

In 1 Chronicles chapter 22 we can see David teaching Solomon. How did he do it? How can we take our own children “back to school” to learn the Lord’s wisdom for the Lord’s purposes?

First, David told Solomon of the extensive PREPARATIONS made for his success (22:1-5). David did not leave things to chance. David did all that he could as a parent to help his son succeed in building up the house of God. What have we done for our children to succeed in building up the Lord’s house? Do we teach them from His word? Do we show them by example on how it applies to everyday life? Do we live out God’s word before their eyes?

Second, David pointed out the PROMISES God made for Solomon (22:6-10). David told the truth of his own life’s shortcomings but added that God had plans for Solomon. He gave his son hope and encouragement in the Lord. God, the Promise Keeper, had good things for Solomon to do with his life. Do we share God’s promises with our kids? Do they pursue the great dream of building up God’s house?

Third, David poured his heart out to PERSUADE Solomon to know and serve God (22:11-13). David urged Solomon to seek discretion and understanding. If Solomon would keep the Lord’s law then he would be successful! However, it was a task requiring strength and courage. Do we persuade our children to take the path of honor and faithfulness in serving God? Do we stress the importance of keeping God’s laws in order to enjoy His success?

Finally, David explained about the great PAINS he took to provide for Solomon’s success (22:14-16). David sacrificed much to assure Solomon’s success. However, he invited Solomon to join him in such sacrifices to ensure success. Do we make such costly sacrifices to build up the Lord’s house today? Why not take your children “back to school” to learn true wisdom today.
