SIMPLEHEARTED

By Jim Morris

Some people are smart enough to calculate the speed and trajectory of a raindrop in the middle of a thunderstorm, but they aren’t smart enough to get out of the rain! You know some folks like this, don’t you?

Why do we sometimes think that we have to be “smart enough” or “good enough” before we can have a saving relationship with God? Think about it. We do not have to possess multiple college degrees or a Noble Peace Prize to approach Jesus. In fact, some of those accomplishments may actually hinder us.

The apostle Paul says, “Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a ‘fool’ so that he may become wise” (1 Corinthians 3:18). Paul is asking us to look to God for true wisdom. Only He is “smart enough” and “good enough” to help us.

In fact, we must all come to Jesus as little children. We must approach His throne as simplehearted servants. We only have to be smart enough to turn to Jesus and He will take care of the rest. The Psalmist tells us:

“The LORD is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
The LORD protects the simplehearted;
when I was in great need, he saved me.
Be at rest once more, O my soul,
for the LORD has been good to you” (Psalm 116:5-7).
