Springs of Water

by Jim Morris

It takes cool, clear water to quench a thirst on a hot, Texas day. In John's gospel account he mentions two "springs of water" that can slake such a thirst. One is natural but the other one is supernatural -- a source of eternal delight.

Jesus asked a woman for a drink at Jacob's well in Samaria but she questioned his motives (John 4:7-9). "Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water" (4:10).

Imagine that! When Jesus asked this woman for something ordinary, He was willing to give her something extraordinary. When Jesus asks something from us, do we fail to understand the gift He offers us, too? Is it too much to give Jesus some of our time, talents and things in exchange for His gift?

"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" (4:11-12). Folks, Jesus sees beneath the surface of things to reveal something more wonderful and amazing than we can imagine. Perhaps it is our lack of faith that limits our ability to draw from His spring of water.

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (4:13-14).

Are you thirsty yet? Why not turn to Jesus for His living water? Why not ask, drink and live!
